Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Day 4 - Back to the Mainland

Heading back to the mainland, Dave figured he should find some protection from the southeast AND west winds. The little cove called Evaristo is a couple hour sail to the west and has protection all around for everything but east. We arrive and it is a bit unsettled with whitecaps pouring in but anchoring down in the furthest southern part of the bay seems to get us out of the weather. Dave just wishes that the depth sounder worked because anchoring based on the color of water is getting a little unnerving in small coves.

Evaristo is a quaint fishing village with over a dozen houses and a school. The residents make their living by fishing and harvesting salt from fields here and over on the island directly in front. They seem perfectly accustomed to boats anchoring in their harbor and go about their normal lives without notice.

The wind was blowing pretty strong. Protection is good from the chop and swell but we were a tad on the cool side in the wind. We decided to dinghy to the shore, relax in the sun behind some rocks and warm up a bit. After absorbing the warmth, we returned to the boat to relax and read before dinner. Dinner was New York steaks with blue cheese crumbles and a salad.

The west wind howled again from midnight onto dawn. Another sleepless night on Seascape. The wind usually stops around dawn so Dave’s night usually consists of a couple hours before midnight and then a few hours around dawn. The boat next to us said he saw 25 knots on his wind gauge. He said he saw 30 knots the night before at Partida Cove when we were at the spit. No wonder it was a bit rough there.
