On our first day out, on the way to Poet's Cove, a Humpback Whale treated us to an hour long show. Humpback Whales are rarely seen in the San Juan channel, so this was quite a treat. As you can see from the pictures, there were a number of boats that stopped to watch. While it looks like the boats were near the whale, they were keeping their distance. The fact that they look deceptively close is a function of just how huge the whale was! The pictures were taken with my new SLR camera on the automatic action setting. I took 700 pictures because when you press the shutter button the camera takes a series of fast action shots. These were the best ones. Absolutely amazing first day at sea.
