Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Curu Wildlife Reserve

We got up early in the morning to go for a hike in the Curu Wildlife Reserve.  We figured if we went early that we would get to see more animals.  We saw everything from deer to anteaters.  This deer greeted us when we arrived at the beach.  We were surprised she was so tame - that is till we realized the park employees feed them.

Melissa managed to get bit in the foot by an ant.  Ouch.  Then a while later we had to cross thousands of the biting ants that were swarming the trail.  We ran like crazy and were stomping our feet the whole time, but Mike managed to get bit.  Double ouch!

There are these weird land crabs that dig holes everywhere.  They are so brightly colored that they look like plastic toys.

There are thousands, no probably millions of them everywhere.

Of course Dave had to play with one in his hidey hole.

Melissa was photographing this big lizard when suddenly it turned and came running full speed straight at her.

Turns out it was actually headed for this tree.

Can you spot the lizard in this picture?

There was this weird seed pod thing we found.  No clue what it is.

There were tons of birds.  These guys looked like some kind of duck.

There were tons of butterflies too.  We’ve now seen at least a dozen different varieties.  This one is a Viceroy.

And this is probably a Cloudless Sulphur and a Cypris.

And for the first time, we got to see the white faced capuchin monkeys – right up close!

And of course there were more howler monkeys.  We were watching a momma with a baby when the baby jumped onto a broken branch and came crashing 30 feet to the ground.  Alarmed we ran over to see if the little guy was hurt.  But he promptly jumped up and ran right back up the tree.

After we got done hiking, we decided to move over to between Cedros and Jesusita Islands.  It was a beautiful anchorage.  Nice and calm.
