Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Tamarindo rocking and rolling

It was a rocky night here in Tamarindo last night, despite the flopper stoppers.  We didn’t get much sleep.  Bleck.  But it’s hard to complain when a rainbow like this comes to visit you.  Of course the rainbow didn’t show up till after the mid-day rains dumped a ton of water on us.  Dave plugged up the scuppers so that we could collect water off the deck and put it in our tanks.  He managed to get about 40 gallons.

We headed in to explore the town and do some shopping.  Melissa managed to buy Dave a new pair of board shorts as his swim trunks are looking pretty sad at this point. The old ones might just have to disappear.

Josh on another of the cruiser boats had an extra surfboard, so Dave decided to give it a go with Mike instructing.  He arrived back at the boat already getting sore chest muscles.  Turns out it’s not the surfing that’s so hard it’s the paddling back out through the waves.  Mike taught him to go under the pounding waves with the board which is kinda creepy at first.

We went in for dinner in the dingy.  Along the way three guys on a panga flagged us down.  They were supposed to get picked up, but apparently their ride managed to forget about them.  So we told them to hop aboard.  We were heavy going across the surf though and with the extra weight in the bow we managed to stuff the dingy right through a wave resulting in a flood of water into the boat.  Oh well, this is why we wear light stuff for a beach landing – it will dry faster.  The three guys helped Dave to pull the dingy up on the beach and we were off into town.

We went to dinner at Witch's Rock which serves a locally brewed beer from Volcano.  We’ve not seen anything other than large production canned beer since leaving the US.  Apparently they have their hops sent down in large dried shipments.  It was good!

Then it was time to head back out to the boat.  That means another dingy launch in the dark in the surf.  We managed one good wave over the bow and were soaked yet again.  I think that’s three sets of clothes today that have been soaked in the surf.
