Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Inspection Day

Inspection starts early at 9am. We all meet at the boat to get an early start as it is sure to be a long day. Nothing major found other than the prop and rudder needing to be replaced, the fact that the boat doesn't start, and after we got done, the boat wouldn't sail. First hint of trouble occurred when we looked at the start instructions the boat owner had sent - first start the generator before attempting to start the engine. Hmmm.... sounds suspicious. And sure enough, the batteries are completely worthless. And then, low and behold, the generator doesn't actually fix the whole issue and by the end of the day the boat wouldn't start. After that most of the inspection went the way Dave figured it would - finding the usual list of stuff that he will have to fix on weekends and evenings. The sailing cruise went a bit awry when the surveyor thought the main sail outhaul (rope that pulls the sail out of the mast for you non sailors out there) was stuck. He put it on the power winch. Meanwhile Dave is yelling "wait, stop, hold on...." as Dave likes to use his brains rather than brawn whenever possible. Sure enough the rope breaks and goes sailing by Dave's head. Turns out the rope clutches were not released and hence even the winch couldn't budge them. This meant the main sail was no longer operable and the surveyor owed the boat owner $100 worth of new rope. Ooops. In the end, nothing was found that couldn't be fixed and all was about like you might figure for a 14 year old boat.
